Taking steps toward sustainability at a global level

More good news has rolled in for global coatings giant PPG with significant advances toward its emissions targets and new products to help them get there.

In its latest Sustainability Report covering its global operations in 2024,  it is reporting almost half its process waste is reused or recycled,  while 41 per cent of sales are now  from sustainably advantaged products

It has also reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 18 per cent within the company’s own operations  and a six per cent reduction in value chain emissions across purchased goods and services, customer processing of sold products and end-of-life treatment of sold products.

Another measure of its footprint is the used of resources and its reporting a 28 per cent reduction in water intensity at priority sites in water-stressed areas.

ON the social responsibility measures it is also claiming 98% of key suppliers have been assessed against its sustainability and social responsibility criteria, with a total of $16.4 million invested into its own Colourful Communities program since 2015

The PPG ENVIRO-PRIME® EPIC200X electrocoat solution that has enabled one customer to cut 3,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year and a  solar installation at PPG’s  plant in Italy,  cutting 390 tonnes annually are examples it is promoting.

ENVIROLUXE

Its ENVIROLUXE Plus powder coatings, which include up to 18 per cent post-industrial recycled plastic (rPET) and are made without PFAS, is another example

PPG EnviroLuxe Plus powder coatings used on furniture and outdoor meals reduce their carbon footprint up to 30 per cent, compared to standard durable powders, due to the elimination of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fluoropolymer and the use of rPET, without compromising protective performance, it says.

PPG Vice President, Global Sustainability Peter Votruba-Drzal says  sustainability is core to PPG’s purpose.

“It’s embedded in how we do business by supporting our customers’ success through sustainably advantaged solutions that deliver industry-leading products, improved performance and operational savings, resulting in reduced water, waste and energy use.”

Favoured employer

Meanwhile PPG has also been recognised as one of ‘Europe’s Best Employers 2025’ by the Financial Times.

The list was compiled via an independent, anonymous survey developed by rankings firm Statista for companies with at least 500 employees in Europe.

The final score is based on personal recommendation (the willingness of employees to recommend their employer) and public recommendation (the willingness to recommend other employers in their industry sector).

PPG Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Rob Massy says it was an hour to be recognised by the survey recipeinets.

“We pride ourselves on providing fulfilling work environments for our approximately 45,000 employees worldwide to advance our purpose to protect and beautify the world.”
