Car enthusiasts and enthusiasts will be wondering just what they did with those old number plates following another record set for the sale of rare plates.
A NSW-issued number plate with the combination ‘55’ selling for $1.625 million was one of the more amazing results at an online auction held by Collecting Cars.
Another NSW-issued plate with the number ‘47’ sold for just over $1.4 million
A Victorian motorcycle plate with number ‘3’ had a sale price of $200,000 while a NSW-issued number plate ‘667’ sold for $340,000.
Collecting Cars Head of Asia-Pacific Lee Hallett, said the sale confirmed the demand for these unique black-and-white number plates remains strong.
“Australian heritage number plates are a solid asset class in their own right,” Hallett says.
“This is Collecting Cars’ second catalogue auction of historic Australian number plates and the results prove more buyers are keen to secure these rare and cherished automotive emblems. Current signs indicate demand is set to grow even further.
“Collecting Cars has been inundated with enquiries to buy and sell these sought-after, numeral-only number plates since our first catalogue auction of heritage number plates in June.”
“Australian automotive collectors and enthusiasts have long cherished these numbers-only heritage number plates for their cars. These historic state-based vehicle plates, often originally issued many generations ago, have become prestigious collectors’ items in recent years.”
