Coatings giant steps up measuring tools for green outcomes

In an age of corporate lip service to environmental outcomes, one coatings giant is determined to have its footprint measured independently and make measurable differences in its product outcomes.

PPG has announced it will be the first US based coatings company to receive third-party certification of tools and processes that quantify environmental impact.

PPG’s has a process called it cradle-to-gate product carbon footprint (PCF) measurement and life cycle assessment (LCA).

It says these measurements have now been validated to internationally recognised ISO standards by independent accreditation firm, WAP Sustainability Consulting.

PPG’s environmental product declaration (EPD) process has also been certified by the International EPD system, the world’s largest EPD publisher.

Product carbon footprints measure the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product’s life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal.

Life cycle assessment evaluate the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s life cycle. Environmental product declarations reveal the environmental impacts of a product throughout its life cycle, from raw material extraction to disposal.

Why it matters

“Having third-party verified LCA, PCF and EPD processes enable our customers to utilise trusted sustainability product information for their reporting, procurement decisions or to qualify for green building certifications,” said Shen Tian, PPG Global Manager, Product Sustainability.

“These capabilities play an important role in meeting our goal to be our customers’ first choice partner for paints, coatings and specialty products.”

“Aligned to increasing customer demand, the verification process has enabled PPG to significantly shorten the delivery time of EPDs, PCFs and LCAs, and to make the tools globally available to its employees to better serve customers.”
