PPG earns listing amongst World’s Greenest Companies

The awards for leading coatings giant PPG continue to stack up, with the latest recognition for its efforts in sustainability.

PPG has been named in Newsweek magazine’s ‘World’s Greenest Companies’ 2025 list that recognises the top 750 large publicly listed companies, across 26 countries, for their environmental sustainability performance.

Over 8,000 companies were evaluated through a comprehensive analysis process, with PPG scoring four out of a possible five stars

Why it matters

Newsweek in its introduction stressed the importance of large companies playing their part in measurable and practical ways in mitigating the worst effects of climate change

“The world’s growing climate crisis—exacerbated by factors like increased greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation—is one of humanity’s greatest threats, according to scientists. This January was the warmest globally on record, according to the World Meteorological Record.

“As temperatures and sea levels rise across the globe, extreme weather phenomena may happen more frequently and precipitation patterns may become more unpredictable, causing either severe droughts or increased flooding.

“Despite the challenges ahead, businesses are stepping up to reduce their carbon footprint.”

For its listings companies needed to meet the minimum sustainability standards established by the European Union and to have publicly available sustainability disclosures and more than 1,000 employees.

Companies were evaluated and scored on more than 25 parameters in four categories – greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water usage, waste generation, and sustainability data disclosures and commitments.

Playing a part

PPG Vice President, Global Sustainability Peter Votruba-Drzal says the recognition comes as the company continues to make strong progress towards its short term and long-term sustainability goals,

“For decades, customers have relied on PPG as a partner to support their most challenging needs to protect and beautify countless assets,” he says.

“By embracing sustainable innovation as a key component of our business strategy, we’re driving growth through solutions that yield sustainable advantages for our customers.”

Progress

According to PPG, its progress up to 2024 against its 2030 sustainability targets, include:41% of sales from sustainably advantaged products, 18% reduction in scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, 6% reduction in scope 3 GHG emissions, reflective of reporting categories 1, 10 and 12  and 48% of process waste sent to reuse, recycle and recovery.

It has also had 28% reduction in water intensity at priority sites  and 98% of key suppliers assessed to sustainability and social responsibility criteria
