Magic milestone falls: 1000km on a battery? Done

In a sign that range anxiety is just waiting for innovation to disappear, a Mercedes has smashed the range record.

Covering a distance greater than Melbourne to Sydney on a single charge, webCG Inc, a Tokyo-based automotive media platform, recorded the new record of 1045 km and set the  Guinness World Record last month.

It is now the official longest distance traveled by an electric vehicle (EV) on a single charge.

While test batteries in China have recorded longer distances, this test was done in a real world circumstance using using a Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+.

Bright signs for the future

It has eclipsed the previous record of 949 kilometre and shows what the future holds for countries like Australia where range anxiety and longer regional distances remain a key factor in preventing the transition to electric power.

While most readily available and affordable EVs have a range of between 300-500 km, the significance of the achievement is it highlights the technology which can percolate down into cheaper models.

EV News reported on the record and noted webCG as a trusted source for automotive news.

“This achievement underscores the advancements in battery technology and vehicle design, making EVs a viable option for long-distance travel,” It wrote.

“This record-breaking endeavor aligns with webCG’s mission to deliver engaging, informative content that supports the automotive industry’s evolution. By highlighting the potential of EVs, webCG aims to inspire both enthusiasts and manufacturers to embrace sustainable automotive solutions.”
