Kangan Institute’s career advisors open day

The Kangan Institute held its inaugural career advisors open day at the Automotive Centre Excellence at Docklands earlier this month with a full complement of career advisors from local schools, industry partners and event sponsors.

Michael Mavrikakis, Acting Education Manager Automotive, welcomed guests by first acknowledging the Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin nation as the traditional owners of the land on which the event was held.

Mavrikakis gave an overview of the Automotive Centre of Excellence, highlighted the technology in the vehicles of today and that the automotive sector has become a very attractive career path for both young men and young women.

He pointed out that many young women have successfully made the transition into what was formerly a male-dominated sector and gone on to highly rewarding careers in many facets of the industry.

The highly interactive event was broken up into three main categories and referenced the apprentice program in each category.

  1. Body making, which incorporates coach building, bus building and fabrication, highlighted the manufacturing processes involved in vehicle curtain trailers and the subtleties of panel fabrication as used in the bus building sector.

  2. The body repair workshop included a demonstration of the intricacies of the technology, and the simplicity of use of the Car-O-Liner electronic measuring system, Car-O-Tronic Vision, in addition to a demonstration of the Car-O-Liner straightening process.

  3. The vehicle refinishing workshop involved refinish teacher, Andrew Makroyiannis demonstrating the ease of spray painting a GM front guard using PPG’s Deltron primer and topcoat system. In addition, several career advisors took the opportunity to try their spray-painting skills on the virtual reality simulator.

The event was supported by a broad cross section of the industry, including 3M Automotive Aftermarket, AMA Group’s Capital S.M.A.R.T, Ford Australia, PPG Industries, Sheen Panel Service, emerging body shop chain, CARe Auto and not-for-profit training organisation WPC Group.

Editor: Mavrikakis and the entire team at Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence are to be congratulated on a great initiative reaching out to the next generation of automotive technicians.
