The Oldsmobile 98 was the full-size flagship model of Oldsmobile that was produced from 1940 until 1996. The name reflecting a Series 90 fitted with an 8-cylinder engine, and was the divisions top-of-the-line model. The 98 shared its General Motors C-body platform with both Buick and Cadillac, and since it was the top-line Oldsmobile, the series had the most technologically advanced items available, such as the Hydramatic Automatic Transmission, automatic headlight dimmer, and the highest-grade interior and exterior trim.

The ninth-gen Ninety-Eights were the roomiest Oldsmobiles ever built thanks to the new GM full-size bodies which set a record for interior width that would not be matched by any car until the full-size GM rear-wheel drive models of the early to mid-1990s, and its main differentiating feature from other models was that it had rear Cadillac-esque tailfins.

This Ninety-Eight was produced in the first week of February 1971 in GM's, Lansing, Michigan plant as a Ninety-Eight Luxury 4-dr pillarless hardtop and was fitted with a 455cui-4v V8 GM Rocket big block engine, that was matched with a THM400 3-spd column-shift automatic transmission and paired to a 12-bolt conventional rear differential with 2.73:1 gearing. The trim/body plate identifies it as painted in GM's Palm Green Metallic paint with a White vinyl top; trimmed with Jade Green Brocade interior and fitted with a front bench seat featuring headrests and a folding armrest. This car was then delivered and subsequently sold in April 1971 by the selling dealer 'Courtesy Chev-Olds Inc' in Attica, Indiana to its first and only one-owner lady in Williamsport, Indiana, and where it had spent all its life prior to arrival in Australia.

This car was purchased from her deceased estate sale in December 2001 and was subsequently shipped into Australia in early 2002 by the current collector owner, and it has been stored indoors undercover all that time. This car is very original and unmolested, and still wears its original body panels and has had one repaint in 2016 in its original factory colour of Palm Green Metallic. The interior and upholstery are in excellent original condition, and the glass & brightwork all very good. The vinyl roof is in good condition, and the underside of the car is very solid with the floor pans and frame rails in excellent rust-free condition. The car runs and drives well, although there is a minor exhaust manifold leak evident particularly from a cold start.

The car has had a repaint in 2016 in the original factory colour of Palm Green Metallic. Mechanically, recently the following work has been performed on the car a new Rochester Quadrajet 4-bbl carburetor has been imported recently from the US & fitted; new air conditioning bearing kit replacement; new coil, ignition leads & battery; rebuilt distributor and a new fuel hose has been fitted following the fuel tank being removed and cleaned.

The owner also can provide the original 1971 Oldsmobile 98 Owners Manual together with the warranty card and Protect-O-Plate, pre-delivery check list, unused spare set of keys, window sticker with RRP of $USD6,486 and Indiana title confirming the original mileage.

So, there you have it, a genuine 'Collectors Barn-Find' car with a No's Matching drivetrain and in rust-free condition, which is now in a running and driving condition. Obviously coming out of hibernation there will be due diligence required with re-hydrating, lubrication & oils as there always is with this age of car and having sat for some twenty three (23) years.
