In another major breakthrough for overcoming barriers to EV uptake, global battery giant CATL has introduced a new battery adding hundreds of kilometres of range and super-fast charging.
CATL launched its Shenxing Pro lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with a specific aim of the European market and targeting lingering resistance to the uptake of electric vehicles
According to the EV Report the Super Long Life & Long-Range version has a a 758 km range and a 1,000,000 km lifespan.
A Super-Fast Charging version that adds 478 km of range in just 10 minutes, it highlights.
The new product was designed to address primary European consumer concerns, including high costs, battery lifespan, range limitations, and safety, the EV report says.
But it also adopts enhanced thermal runaway safety, with its NP 3.0 technology, and advanced safety features, that include no fire and no smoke after thermal runaway.
Barriers
The launch story notes the growth of EVs in the EU with SNE and MarkLines EV penetration rate growing from 23 per cent to 26 percent in the first half of 2025 and is projected to reach 29 per cent by the end of the year. This is predicted to amount to four million new EVs in 2025.
But it also notes a 2025 McKinsey survey identified persistent consumer barriers, including high costs, battery lifespan, range limitations, charging infrastructure gaps, and battery safety.
These are similar issues to those faced by market I Australia, where despite some recent growth in EVs including a record quarter they remain less than 10 per cent of the new car market and only about two per cent of the overall car parc.
Whether the CATYL technology will be available in Australia is uncertain
Power Innovations
Shenxing Pro Super Long Life & Long-Range Battery: This is the world’s first LFP battery to achieve a 758 km WLTP range and a record-breaking 12-year / 1,000,000 km lifespan. With only 9 per cent degradation after the first 200,000 km.
Shenxing Pro Super-Fast Charging Battery: This variant can charge 478 km of WLTP range in just 10 minutes, which is equivalent to 0.8 km per second.
“It delivers thrilling performance, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 2.5 seconds even at a 20% state of charge (SOC). It also maintains exceptional performance in extreme cold, achieving 410 km of range in 20 minutes at –20°C. This model is backed by a warranty of up to 10 years / 240,000 km.”
