The relationship to the digital world shapes BASF’s 2017/18 Automotive Color Trend predictions

A desire for more simplicity and transparency in a digital world inspired the overarching theme of BASF’s Automotive Color Trends for 2017/18 – Translucid.
The designers of BASF’s Coatings division translated the question of individual data control, as well as the need for an extensive gathering of information for technical and social possibilities into a collection of 65 new automotive colors.

The 65 colors of BASF’s Automotive Color Trends 2017-18 – Translucid

Digital Shifts – Intense blues and new light colors
In the digital world, the beauty of the body and other analog objects gain more attention with an increasing number of people looking to hide from data collectors and surveillance. This trend affects the automotive color palettes. Warm, beige colors deal with aspects of the skin, while dark and light blues express digitalization of the human body.
Increasing connection – Pastel and chromatic colors
In addition, data exchanged without the confines of time and space create fluid boundaries. Cars are developing from vehicles into highly complex products that communicate intensively with drivers and the environment. The intricacy of our connection to objects is reflected in dimensional sparkle and a mixture of crisp and clear effects. Pastel and chromatic colors and intense blues represent the image of new technologies and emphasize the uniqueness of the digital age.
In general, the relationship of fascination and fear as seen in the reflection in our digital mirror oscillates between dark and medium grays.
Color expertise of the Coatings division
The designers of BASF’s Coatings division in China, Japan, the United States and Germany develop up-and-coming colors for the automotive industry every year conducting extensive research and in-depth analysis. They uncover global trends and cultural shifts that will influence vehicle color choices three to five years from now. In addition to identifying global trends, the regional design teams find unique themes influenced by local circumstances and conditions in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), North America and AsiaPacific.

Unique ANDARO® colours shine in Shanghai

Chinese vehicle maker, BYD, has taken advantage of PPG waterborne coatings featuring patented ANDARO® pigments to create a brilliant finish on its new models at Auto Shanghai 2017.

When it came to putting an eye-catching finishing touch on its latest concept cars, the ‘Dynasty’ and the ‘Song 7’, BYD called on the expertise of PPG’s Colour Styling Team. It was all about providing a rich, vibrant look and strong visual appeal to BYD’s vehicles to help encourage interest from show visitors, says David Cui, PPG Product Manager and Market Development Director, Automotive Coatings, Asia Pacific.

“We are excited to work with BYD to develop brilliant and distinctive colours for its concept cars and new models. In addition to delivering high-quality, sustainable products such as our low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) waterborne automotive coatings, PPG is committed to collaborating with customers to enhance their brand recognition through value-added colour solutions and innovative technologies.”

Drawing inspiration from PPG’s 2020 automotive colour palette, the PPG Colour Styling Team utilised PPG’s patented, high-chroma ANDARO® nano-pigment tint dispersion technology to create colours with the high chromaticity requested by BYD’s design team. In order to match the Dynasty concept vehicle’s dragon-inspired exterior which draws on China’s rich cultural heritage, the PPG Team developed ‘Emperor Red’ – an intense red with high colour saturation. BYD’s long-anticipated seven-seat Song 7 model also incorporated a multi-layer paint finish, incorporating blue Andaro pigment, to deliver a brilliant appearance.

National Corvette Museum upholds a promise with help from PPG

With help from a range of supporters, the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, has stepped in to make a promise come true. Before being killed in a 2015 car accident while on duty, Kentucky police officer, Burke Rhoads, had been restoring a Corvette in order to drive his daughter, Jacquelyn, to her prom when she turned 16 years old. The museum offered to restore the entire car, in a gesture of appreciation to the nation’s police forces and a tribute to Officer Rhoads, and to help a grieving family heal. Once the car’s mechanicals and body were restored, the museum turned to PPG, says Bill Shaw, PPG Director of Marketing Automotive Refinish.   “Contributing our products for this worthwhile cause was something we were happy to do. We were humbled by the request. It is a pleasure and a privilege to help the family members of those who serve and protect us every day.”

The National Corvette Museum already had an ongoing relationship with PPG – established in 2014, when a sinkhole under the museum floor swallowed eight rare Corvettes, including the 1984 Indy 500 PPG pace car. Although all the cars were recovered, five were damaged beyond repair. For more about the National Corvette Museum, visit www.corvettemuseum.org.
