CAPITAL S.M.A.R.T TO EXPAND IN NEW ZEALAND

Capital S.M.A.R.T Repairs today announced it was expanding its operations in New Zealand with two new locations, one in Auckland and one in Christchurch.

Group Operations Director, Jim Vais, said the expansion for S.M.A.R.T would build upon the strong relationship S.M.A.R.T has with AA Insurance and Vero and would occur in the last quarter of 2016.

“The majority of our repairs are conducted on a “Next Day” basis and we are looking forward to bringing our service offering to new locations in New Zealand,“ Mr Vais said.

Capital S.M.A.R.T has been operating in Penrose, Auckland since 2014, servicing customers for AA Insurance, a joint venture between the New Zealand Automobile Association and the Suncorp Group.

From a single concept site in 2008, Capital S.M.A.R.T currently operates 36 repair sites across Australia and New Zealand.

AARN to fold after more than 20 years of operation

AARN Update to Members and Corporate Partners 12th of August 2016

AARN Members and Corporate Partners,

It was proposed in April that the AARN network change from being a social and networking entity to becoming a work provider and buying group by initiating some key elements for sustainability.

Members were offered the choice to commit to a new operating model in June 2016;

Specifically this was :

  • Co-branding to increase both B2B and public awareness of the group
  • Governance – implement and strengthen the required governance within the network to ensure viability of all concerned.
  • Procurement – included managed procurement to increase cost effectiveness of the independent repairer
  • Work provision – increase the likely hood of work provision by implementing all of the above.

AARN firmly believed in the co-operative model which was created to assist independent repairers face the current instability of the industry being encountered by consolidation of repair facilities and work providers requiring greater capacity and governance by repairers.

However, following extensive consultation, insufficient members committed to the new model to make it financially viable to continue AARNs operations.

The Board of AARN accepts the decision of members and shareholders and so it is with deep regret that AARN advises after 20 years in the industry it will now cease trading.

In the coming weeks AARN will be appointing a liquidator to finalise its affairs.

The liquidators will be charged with ensuring all accounts and taxation requirements are completed prior to releasing balance of capital to current shareholders.  The appointed Liquidator will contact all shareholders in due course, we appreciate your patience in this matter as there is a legal process which needs to be respected.

We also request that any entities who have outstanding accounts owed to AARN settle these expeditiously to assist with our wind-up requirements.

The AARN Board would like to take this opportunity to thank all of its repairer members and corporate partners for their participation in the past 20 years.  Whilst being at the forefront of industry relationships for a substantial time, we also feel the viability for a network not providing the above services is limited.

We wish all of our counterparts well in their endeavours to assist in securing a long term future for automotive repair independent operators.

On behalf of Suellen and myself, it has been an absolute pleasure, we wish you all our best wishes for a prosperous future and have collectively sincerely enjoyed our time at AARN over the past 20 years.

Kindest regards,

Di

Dianne Rawlings

CEO/MD

Editor: The above is the official release by AARN to their members and we thank Di Rawlings for sharing this with us. It is sad to see AARN having to take this action and I have been in touch with Di Rawlings and she had this to say: “AARN are currently in a windup situation with a liquidator being appointed in the near future.  I will add this is voluntary and AARN is solvent, appointing a liquidator is simply to wind up with ATO, ASIC and shareholders.”

I am here at NACE right now and having just attended a big session on consolidation I can assure you that it is still taking place at a rapid pace and there is no doubt that shops who make the effort to either consolidate, join a group or put the effort into their businesses with training, education, update of equipment and technology and are receptive to change have a future in this industry.

NACE 2016

NACE 2016 began with a host of information, education and training sessions in various rooms and also sessions centre stage on the actual show floor.

There were many exhibitors displaying their products and services with demonstrations also taking place.

The popular MSO Symposium took place in the afternoon and while it was a marathon five hours there was a wealth of information provided by the many panel discussion segments ensuring attendees not only received up to date information but also were also able to ask questions of the many panellists from various segments of the industry.

As always at events in the USA there were many receptions held in the evening at the excellent host hotels in the area with attendees able to take advantage of food, drinks and networking.

Axalta Commercial Vehicle Business Symposium in Anaheim, California

Axalta Coating Systems held their welcome reception at the Anaheim Marriott where commercial vehicle repair business owners from around the USA were meeting for a Commercial Vehicle Business Symposium.

Included in this symposium were guests from Australia which included Michael Busch, Axalta Key Account Manager-Military and Heavy Duty Trucks, Darren Wales and Rob Lanham from Wales Truck Repairs in Sydney and Peter Franck from Rheinmetal-Man Vehicles in Brisbane.

They were joined at the welcome reception by Jeff Hendler and David Newton-Ross who were attending CIC and NACE.

“It was great to see the networking taking place between the American and Australian shop owners and I am sure the symposium and visits to shops in the USA will be of great benefit to the Australians,” said Newton-Ross.

CIC visit to Don’s Garage

Don and Ann Long hosted more than 150 CIC participants at their amazing garage in Corona, California immediately following the CIC Meeting.

The guests were not only blown away by the amazing display of classic American cars and memorabilia but also the 60s lunch provided for everyone in Don’s Diner and at tables inside the garage itself.

Don and Ann retired from the industry a few years ago after a major consolidator bought their multiple site body shop and towing operations and are now ‘living the dream’ and it was very nice to see them interacting with their friends from the industry, some they had not met for many years.

Mark Czvitkovits from I-CAR Australia was among the guests and the visit was a highlight of his trip to NACE. No doubt he will be talking about it in his next column in the magazine!

Thanks must go one again to Don and Ann for being the best hosts and to Jeff Hendler and the team at CIC for arranging the visit.

The visit was sponsored by PPG, 3M and the local PPG Distributor Martin Autocolor.

Day two of CIC at NACE

The second day of the CIC Meeting at NACE in Anaheim, California was attended and received as well as the first with many excellent presentations and panels.

Topics on the day included special announcements from I-CAR and SAE on training arrangements, a report from the marketing committee, a very lively parts and materials panel discussion and some technical information.

Attendees agreed that this was one of the best CIC meetings for some time-just another fine example of networking and the industry working together to improve on what is emerging as a rapidly changing environment.

NACE WEEK STARTS WITH MEETINGS AND RECEPTIONS

As NACE 2016 week got underway in Anaheim, California at the Anaheim Convention Centre attendees had the opportunity to attend meetings and receptions presented by SCRS (Society of Collision Repair Specialists) and CIC (Collision Industry Conference) as well as I-CAR on Tuesday.

The CIC meeting which carried over into the next day was attended by more than 400 with lively presentations and debate; especially the final topic for the day on shop and parts certification! OEMs brought applause from the audience when they took an insurer representative to task for comparing aftermarket to OEM parts citing competition as a good thing. Competition as the Audi representative pointed out is not competition when you are not comparing like for like!

Following the afternoon session attendees made the most of the drinks and food on offer to network with their peers at the end of a very successful day.

CIC resumes Wednesday AM followed by a visit to Don’s garage in the PM (with more than 150 expected to attend) and the NACE welcome party in the Convention Plaza in the evening.
